Every Scout unit needs trained leaders and they also need trained Scouts. BSA offers two courses on leadership. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is for youth and Wood Badge is for adults. These course are offered by Montana Council and attending will help your unit and make you a better Scout Leader.

So when do we have courses this year?

Wood Badge

Wood Badge 2020
East Course @ K-M Scout Ranch

West Course @ Grizzly Base

More About Wood Badge
The Wood Badge course centers upon the concepts of servant leadership and leaving a legacy. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on “how to.” The skills come alive during the week as the patrol completes a patrol project based upon what they have learned.

Wood Badge is a six-day course or two three day weekends. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.

WORK YOUR TICKET

The Wood Badge story has two chapters.

Chapter 1: The experiential course, which takes place over one six-day week or two three-day weekends and includes leadership classes, games, activities and plenty of meaningful conversations.

Chapter 2: The Wood Badge ticket, a series of five projects (completed after Chapter 1) that benefit a Scouter’s home unit and local community. These ticket items extend the reach of Wood Badge well beyond the six-day course. Fifty participants completing five ticket items each means 250 improvements to Scouting. And that’s just from one course.

More About NYLT
By the time our youth make it to First Class they are at the beginning of their chapter of becoming a leader.  Attendance at NYLT will give our Scouts the training and tools to become leaders.  They will get first hand experience working with other youth as their leaders and get feedback on what worked and what did not.  They will be able to use this experience and bring it back to their Troops and Crews and put it to use.

Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

For more information including brochures and registration form, go to the NYLT page of the Montana Council Website.

If your Scout is interested in being a Staff member for NYLT they need to get their applications to the course directors ASAP!
