MBU is a program connecting Boy Scouts, ages 11-18, with topics they are interested in and allowing them to work on or complete Merit Badges related to those topics.  Merit Badges are standard across the country, so that a boy earning the badge completes the same requirements regardless of where he lives.

Our program at Carroll College, partnering with UM Helena, brings in 400+ Boy Scouts from across Montana and even some from out of state.  It is the single largest event for Boy Scouts in Montana!  Besides being fun, it is a great experience for these boys to set foot on a college campus and have a positive, memorable experience with college employees and students.   Scouts arrive on April 8th and can either pitch a tent in the new Tent City or stay inside the gym.  All classes are held on April 9th.  As the program has grown, we have needs other than counselors.  The Adult Indoor Training will be held again, but we are also looking for new adult programs.  Let us know how you’d like to participate.

Your help is needed to teach a Merit Badge.  There are 136 Merit Badges for you to choose from!
Here’s what it takes:
  • Chose a topic of which you are knowledgeable from the available Merit Badges  http://www.scouting.org/meritbadges.aspx
  • Ensure that your Youth Protection is current
  • Ensure that you are in good standing and complete the Counselor Application Form if necessary
  • Plan a class to cover the specific requirements of the Merit Badge
  •   Be available 7:00am – 5:30pm on Saturday, April 9th to teach the class and complete record keeping.

OR – Lead an Adult Education Program! We can use whatever talent you have!

Here is a recap of last years MBU!

We have 445 Boy Scouts from 63 different Troops from Montana and Wyoming coming to Helena on Saturday.  314 are staying on campus Friday night.  350 breakfasts will be served.  Up to 600 lunches will be served.  40 different classes/ events will be held.  Directly supporting this are 29 Scouters & Helena College staff, 13 Carroll students, 11 Carroll staff Members, and 4 crazed MBU staff members (thanks Beth, Patrick, & Doug).  Indirect support from adult leaders, Exploration Works staff members, Carroll staff, Sodexo staff, and YMCA staff members is estimated at 200 people. And this all started with a conversation around a campfire about three years ago.  See – It’s good to go camping!!!
